This unit was all about different styles of writing. Then we had to emulate one of the styles in an essay of our own. I believe I did a good job of understanding the point of the author in using his or her style; yet I kind of used their styles as a flavor or tint to my papers, because I strongly believe in self-expression and self-creation. I create myself of identity partly on what and how I write and thus, this attitude is apparent in my original essay. Yet, I felt quite inspired by Zora Hurston’s “How It Feels To Be Colored Me” and the way she used emotional expression to connect the reader to the factual events and ultimately to her being. I loved that idea, yet I used Jonathan Edwards “Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God” flavored with a bit of Franklin’s logic from “The Way To Wealth” to create my own piece of work. The reason is because, as I am a daughter of a scientist and scientific reasoning comes easily to me (most of the times!) the logical and explanatorily way of writing appeals to me. I believe I can bring the reader to my level of understanding by employing the rhetorical devices I’ve learned so far in this course. My strengths probably lie in information and ideals. I have many things to express and say about a certain thing or topic, yet usually I struggle to bring them all to a clear and effective point. My original essay titled, “Americans at Large” is a very pointed piece of writing aimed at, well you guessed it; Americans. I used many rhetorical devices to sustain my point and draw relations between our materialistic and immoral attitude in life and even alluded to American history; our country folk are known to put much authority to their past. Thus, I did my best to emulate yet also use my own stylistic devices to hone the point home.
